BOOK CLUB LIVE with Julie Seely – Skinny House

Growing up in Baltimore, Julie Seely knew nothing about her past. It wasn’t until a teacher asked her young son to complete an assignment about family histories that she was motivated to find answers. Up until then, Julie’s family past was unspoken. Her father stammered when asked about his childhood in New York and the now famous Skinny House that his father built. Today, all that remains is that house, a box of ephemera, and a handful of memories. Piecing together these items and historical research, Julie writes Skinny House, a brief, nonfiction account of the past during the Great Depression through the lens of one black family. Some themes echo our contemporary lives: the fragility of an economy, the fair treatment of people of color, and the persistent peril to personal legacies that family secrets bring.
